Gospel
choir to mark MLK Day
A gospel
choir of more than 300 will pay tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.
as the grand finale to a day of events in Sacramento to honor his
fight for freedom, equality and the dignity of all people.
The massive choral event will be held at 5 p.m., Monday, Jan. 20
in the University Union Ballroom at California State University,
Sacramento.
King appeared on the campus on Oct. 16, 1967. Recordings of his
speech that day and film from his life will be shown during the
choral event.
This is the second year that the interfaith, multiethnic choir has
marked the occasion at CSUS and the 12th annual performance of the
group, which is composed of singers from churches and community
choirs throughout the region. Dorothy Love-Thornton will conduct.
Other events that day include a march from the Oak Park area along
Martin Luther King Boulevard then over to the Capitol, as well as
a job and health fair at Florin Mall.
Tickets for the gospel concert are $10 in advance and $12 at the
door. Tickets are available at the CSUS Ticket Office (916) 278-4323,
or from MLK Choir members and local churches.
