PUBLIC AFFAIRS: SAC STATE VIDEO

“Motown Jukin”

“Motown Jukin’” is back by popular demand at Sacramento State for a one-time-only performance 6 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 31.

Produced by Sacramento Black Art of Dance and Sons/Ancestors Players, the interpretive dance concert is a tribute to Motown Records’ 50th anniversary. It played to turn-away crowds when first staged in October.

Tickets are expected to go fast. The cost is $12 general admission, $10 for students and seniors and $8 for children. Proceeds will help send Sac State Theatre and Dance students to the American College Dance Festival, the International Association of Blacks in Dance conference and the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

The concert features songs such as “Tears of a Clown,” “Papa was a Rolling Stone,” and “War,” and ends with a second-act tribute to Michael Jackson.

This time it’s moved to the larger stage of the University Theatre so even more people will have a chance to enjoy the Motown sound.

“The concert was such a major success and so many folks were turned away from the smaller stage in October, we wanted to make sure that the community had another opportunity to see the show,” says Linda Goodrich, S/BAD director and chair of Sacramento State’s Theatre and Dance Department.

Sons/Ancestors, which has brought Black theater to campus since the late 1970s, will present alternating vignettes during the dance pieces to further tell the story of Motown’s history and impact on American culture, says Professor Melinda Wilson, Sons/Ancestors advisor and assistant director.
