Graduation weekend will be filled with pomp, circumstance, and a few fresh twists as Sacramento State holds its Winter Commencement ceremonies Friday, Dec. 18, and Saturday, Dec. 19, at Sleep Train Arena.

In his first Commencement as the University’s top Hornet, President Robert S. Nelsen plans to do things a little differently and shake each graduate’s hand as he or she crosses the stage. Nearly 3,500 students – including bachelor’s, master’s and credential candidates – are eligible to participate. And for the first time, Sacramento State will live-stream each ceremony for graduates’ friends and family, with remote- and replay-viewing (available through a link on www.csus.edu/commencement). Graduates and guests at the arena will be able to view the ceremonies on two 192-inch monitors, stationed on each side of the stage.

Community leader Joyce Raley Teel will be awarded an honorary doctorate during the College of Business Administration ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19. The daughter of Raley’s grocery store chain founder Thomas Raley, Teel started the company’s Food for Families program, which last year alone collected more than 3 million pounds of food for area families. She also co-chairs the Thomas Raley Foundation with her husband, Sac State alumnus James Teel ’53 (Business Administration).

The College of Business Administration ceremony also will feature the college’s “Golden Grads.” Graduates from the Class of 1965, attired in special gold gowns and mortarboards, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their own commencements.
