Controversial Cartoonist To Speak on Comedy, Race

Satirical race-relations comic strip creator Aaron McGruder will speak at 11:45 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 7 in the California State University, Sacramento Union Ballroom.

The Boondocks cartoonist will discuss "What's the Color of Comedy?: Race, Society and Comic Strips." The lecture is part of the University Union's Cultural Events Series that will also feature an Afro-Cuban concert by the band "Up From the Roots" on Oct. 21.

The Boondocks features young urban African-American characters that are thrust into the life of "white" suburbia. The strip has been the subject of controversial coverage since its April debut in more than 150 newspapers. Those who disagree with the cartoon argue it is biased. McGruder, a University of Maryland graduate with a degree in Afro-American Studies, defends his strip and its focus on race.
