CSUS to Honor Philanthropists
with New Award at Commencement
The first-ever California State University, Sacramento President’s
Award will be presented to Hong Kong philanthropists Winnie and
Kenneth Leung during the University’s commencement ceremonies
this weekend. Ceremonies will be held on Friday and Saturday,
Dec. 15 and 16 at Arco Arena.
The Leungs will receive their award during the College of
Business Administration commencement ceremony at 11:30 a.m.,
Saturday, Dec. 16.
The President’s Award honors outstanding service to the
University, to higher education or to the public and common
good.
Winnie Leung graduated from CSUS in 1966 while an exchange
student from Hong Kong. The successful international businesswoman
and entrepreneur was named the College of Business Administration’s
Outstanding Alumna in 1985 and was awarded the CSUS Alumni
Association’s Distinguished Service Award and Order of the
Hornet in 1989.
Winnie Leung established the CSUS alumni chapter in Hong
Kong. She and her husband Kenneth, an honorary CSUS alumnus
and Hong Kong banker, also started an endowment to fund a
scholarship in political science and donated replicas of two
historic Chinese statues to the CSUS library.
The Leung’s three children are also CSUS graduates. Josephine
earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration in
1991, Phyllis graduated in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in
interior design and Daniel receive his bachelor’s degree in
business administration with an international business concentration
in 1999.
In addition to the presentation of the President’s Award,
the College of Business Administration commencement will feature
an address by graduating student Angela Solvin. Other commencement
speakers include Anne Rudin, former mayor of Sacramento, addressing
the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies
commencement; James C. Barone, director of the Sacramento
Air Logistics Center at McClellan Air Force Base addressing
the College of Education commencement; Orin N. Bennett, vice
president of MHM Engineers and Surveyors, addressing the College
of Engineering commencement; and Ernest Olson, recreation
and leisure studies professor, addressing the College of Health
and Human Services commencement.
