PARTY PAIR--Ninety-year-old student Estelle Rees-Arroyo wishes relative youngster Herky the Hornet a happy birthday. Herky will celebrate his 60th year as the Sac State mascot, during Homecoming celebrations, Oct. 8-13.
In 1967, Martin Luther King Jr. spoke to a crowd of 7,000 students at Sac State’s Hornet Stadium. A 40th anniversary celebration of the speech will be held on Oct. 16. For details, visit www.csus.edu/union.
Homecoming 2007: Festival, football, Herky and a parade
Join us for Herky’s 60th Birthday Celebration on Saturday, Oct. 13. The party begins at 10 a.m. And the football game against Montana kicks off at 2:05 p.m. It all starts in the Tailgate Zone where you’ll find:
- The Kids Zone, featuring jump houses, face painting, carnival games and a time to meet and greet Herky’s other mascot friends.
- A chance for young fans to join in the ASI Children’s Center Birthday Party Parade.
- Music by Mumbo Gumbo.
- Athletic team demonstration booths.

Gathering of the Golden Grads
Classmates from 1949 to 1958 are invited to the annual Homecoming Week Golden Grads Luncheon at the Alumni Center on Wednesday, Oct. 10. The reunion starts with a social at 11:30 a.m. and ends with a personalized tour of the Hornet Bookstore after lunch. Jack Bertolucci, ’50, and Penny Kastanis, ’57, will share memories of the early years at Sac State.

Doctoral candidates get to work
Seventeen professionals from local school districts, colleges and other educational organizations have started down the road to their doctoral degree in education at Sac State. The three-year program is designed to enhance their leadership qualities and is built around their schedules.
Chinese students learn American taxes
Sac State is hosting 18 students from central China’s Hubei Province to learn how the American tax system works. They will take classes in business, international accounting and leadership development, and will job shadow at the California Franchise Tax Board.
Capture Herky, get an iPod
This year marks Herky the Hornet’s 60th year as the Sac State mascot. But instead of presents, all he wants are video tributes. The loveable icon will give away two music players for the best video tribute to him on YouTube. Entries are due by midnight, Oct. 9.
Exhibit highlights life of Joe Serna
The public will get a chance to see official papers, personal correspondence, and other items covering the life of former mayor and Sac State professor Joseph Serna during a special exhibit that runs through Feb. 29. The exhibit in the library’s Special Collections and University Archives will be open from 1 to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Preview for potential students
Prospective students and their families can get a sneak peek at what Sac State has to offer on Preview Day, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 13, in the University Union Ballroom. Activities include campus tours and information sessions about admissions, financial aid and housing.
University, Sacramento Opera team up
Sac State’s music instructors want to take the department’s opera offerings in a different direction, so they’ve turned to the pros to forge a new program. Following the retirement of voice coach and opera director Lynn Stradley, associate professor of voice Robin Fisher reached out to her friends at Sacramento Opera to help create something new.
Colberg’s Top 10
Sac State athletics is counting down the top moments in head coach Debby Colberg’s illustrious 32-year career. The list, compiled by members of the athletic media relations office as well as current and past employees of the Sac State athletics department, is featured on the Hornet Sports website.
Sac State football coaches' luncheons take place at noon on Mondays at Fresh Choice, 535 Howe Ave. At the luncheons Hornet head coach Marshall Sperbeck reviews the team's most recent effort and provides a preview for the upcoming opponent.
Tennis sends six to All-American Championships
Sac State’s men’s and women’s tennis programs are being represented by a school-record-tying six players at this year’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships at the University of Tulsa.
