National Geographic-Sponsored Team to Make
Volcanic Slide Presentation

California State University, Sacramento geology professor Brian Hausback and members of his National Geographic-sponsored team will present a slide show titled "National Geographic Expedition to the Volcanoes of Baja, California" at 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 23, in the University Union Hinde Auditorium.

In May, the eight-member research team explored two volcanoes, the San Luis volcano and the La Reforma caldera on the Gulf of California coast on Mexico's Baja peninsula. Their research focus was volcanic hazard analysis, determining the likelihood of the volcanoes erupting again and if so, when they might. The team also collected samples for carbon and argon dating to determine both the volcanoes ages and eruption histories.

During their research the team was faced with harsh conditions, especially on their journey to the La Reforma volcano. Access to the site required the team to go in by foot or boat. Despite the conditions Hausback says, "We found exactly what we had hoped to find."

The show will include highlights from both expeditions to the San Luis volcano and the La Reforma caldera.
