CSUS Kicks Off Winter Jass Festival
Explore America’s musical roots and all that jazz at the
California State University, Sacramento 10th annual Winter
Jazz Festival Dec. 8 and 9.
Festivities get under way
with a concert beginning at 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 8 at the
Music Recital Hall by the Folsom High School Jazz Choir, the
American River College Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the award
winning CSUS Vocal Jazz Ensemble directed by professor Julie
Adams.
The festival continues from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec.
9 and will
feature more than 45 local junior high, high school and
college jazz bands, as well as a performance by renowned
trumpet player Bobby Shew.
Shew, a former member of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and the
Buddy Rich Big Band, has had his trumpet work featured on
many hit television series including Don Kirschner’s Rock
Concert,Happy Days,Hawaii 5-0, and Eight Is Enough. His work
on soundtracks includes Grease I and II, The Muppet
Movie and Taxi.
In addition to a busy
touring and recording schedule, Shew has acted as the as the
National Trumpet Chairman for the International Association of
Jazz Educators for the past 16 years.
Shew will perform
at the festival with the Capitol Jazz Project at 6 p.m.,
Saturday, Dec. 10 at the CSUS Music Recital
Hall.
Tickets to the festival events range from $4 to
$6 and are available at the CSUS Ticket Box Office, (916)

be purchased at the door one hour prior to performances.
