Changing the face of science

We believe that science more effectively serves society when informed by diverse social and ethnic perspectives. Therefore, the college has commited to recruiting and graduating students from populations typically underrepresented in the sciences. Nearly %50 of majors in the college belong to a minority population. Furthermore, we nurture success of our diverse students through academic support programs for students who face social, economic and educationsl barriers to careers in the sciences or mathematics. These programs serve hundreds of students each year, and have proven effective in helping students progress toward graduation. Through these efforts we are changing the face of science.

Science Educational Equity (SEE)

SEE sponsors a wide range of structured activities designed to build academic excellence, enhance personal development, and develop a sense of social responsibility. Perhaps most importantly, SEE strives to create a learning community in which students are expected to share their knowledge with other students, provide personal and moral support to each other, participate in academic and extracurricular activities, and expand their understanding and appreciation for the cultural experiences of all members of the SEE family. Approximately 300 students actively participate in SEE activities each year.

Multicultural Organization of Science Students (MOSS)

MOSS, founded in 1980 by a group of students, provides a directional support system for underrepresented college students interested in the sciences. Support activities include tutoring, study groups, visits to professional and graduate schools and dissemination of information regarding summer research programs and conferences .
