BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

The Department of Biological Sciences offers the BA and the BS in Biological Sciences. The BA program provides a broad background in Biological Sciences with coverage of the fundamental areas of biology. The BA satisfies the minimum requirements for a major in Life Sciences leading to a Single Subject Teaching Credential. With additional coursework and appropriate selection of courses in the GE Program, the BA satisfies minimum requirements for admission to professional schools in dentistry, human medicine, veterinary medicine, and other allied health fields. The BS programs provide the necessary preparation for post graduate work. The graduate program leads to a MS degree, and provides an opportunity to receive advanced training in biological sciences and to pursue independent research.

CHEMISTRY

The Department of Chemistry serves students who have a variety of interests. Students who complete a BA (general, bio- chemistry or forensics), BS, or MS program may continue on for further training in a Ph.D. program or seek employment as a biochemist, forensic chemist, analytical chemist, inorganic chemist, organic chemist or technical sales representative. If you are interested in pharmacy, medicine or dentistry you can major in chemistry while taking other pre-pharmacy or pre-medical courses. The department is well equipped with modern instrumentation and computers which students can use in their courses and in laboratory research.

GEOGRAPHY

Explore your world! Discover the how, the why, and the when behind the where, from the hydrology of Torres del Paine, Chile to the location of edge cities in metropolitan Sacramento. Discover the processes which generate the spatial distributions of physical and cultural phenomena on and near the Earth's surface. In addition to a full complement of systematic courses in physical, cultural and regional geography, the Geography Department provides hands-on instruction in geographic information systems, computer cartography, remote sensing, spatial analysis, and field techniques in physical, urban, and rural geography.

GEOLOGY

The Department of Geology is housed in a new five-story building shared with the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey. Because of the close working relationship with the USGS and an active geology faculty, there are many opportunities for students to gain research experience at the undergraduate level. The Department is also home to one of the largest on-campus teaching well fields in the nation that allows students at all levels to gain experience using state-of-the-art equipment to analyze and monitor ground water. A small student/faculty ratio, plus a rigorous course of study, contribute to the excellent reputation of the CSUS Geology Department with employers and graduate schools.

MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS

The Mathematics and Statistics Department delivers high-quality teaching, research in many specialties, and a broad range of services to the community, especially concentrating on the teaching and learning of mathematics and a variety of statistical services. We offer the opportunity to study a broad range of mathematical and statistical topics in small classes under the guidance of more than twenty-five professional mathematicians and statisticians.

PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY

The Department of Physics and Astronomy has a focus on under- graduate instruction and research with unusual opportunities for students to work closely with faculty and to become involved with scientific instruments and equipment. While seeking a BS or a BA degree in physics our students may choose to emphasize astronomy, applied physics, science education or a program of advanced preparation for graduate study in physics or related fields. These students can be found in major doctoral programs in physics and in many engineering fields around the country.
