TESTING REQUIREMENTS
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required if your native language is not English**. The minimum score for undergraduates is 510. The minimum score for graduates is 550 with the following exceptions: for Communication Studies 560, Speech Pathology 560, English 600, and International Affairs 570. Education Testing Service now offers a computer based TOEFL exam. Those students completing the computer based TOEFL will be required to earn a minimum of 180 for undergraduates, and 213 for graduate admission with the following exceptions: for Communication Studies 220, Speech Pathology 220, English 250, and International Affairs 230. Students completing the new internet based test will be required to submit a minimum score of 64 for undergraduates and 80 for graduates and second bachelor’s degree (some graduate departments will have higher score requirements).
Note: California State University Sacramento interprets “where English was the principal language of instruction” to mean that a school is located in a country where English is the native language (the daily medium of communication of the majority of residents is English), and that the students receive academic instruction in all subjects (except foreign language courses) at all levels of education in English.
The institution code required when requesting score reports from ETS is 4671.
No decision will be made on your application for admission until your official report on the TOEFL exam is received.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) Graduate students should contact the graduate department to determine if GRE or GMAT is required. For example: the College of Business does require the GMAT test.
Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) or the American Collegiate Test (ACT) Undergraduate students should submit photo copies of the official score report if they have taken the exam. The exam is not required; however, scores may be used to exempt students from the university Placement tests if admitted.
PLACEMENT TESTS
The CSU requires new undergraduate students to be tested in English (English Placement Test-EPT) and Mathematics (Entry Level Mathematics Test-ELM) prior to enrollment. These are not admission tests but determine eligibility to enroll in specific courses. Students may be exempt for EPT and ELM based on prior coursework or their SAT/ACT results. The International Admissions Office will notify you if you are required to take the tests.
