General Information

Thank you for your interest in California State University, Sacramento. Sacramento State is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University System, the largest senior public system of higher education in the United States. Our University seeks to maintain a balanced program with students from countries around the world while assisting sponsored students from developing countries to enroll in appropriate programs. Currently, international students from over 100 countries attend the University. Sacramento State University enrolls approximately 500 international students in a total student population of approximately 28,000.

The University offers a wide range of academic programs leading to bachelor's and master's degrees in the liberal arts, sciences and professional level disciplines. There are no doctoral programs. Sacramento State also offers a comprehensive teacher preparation program and the pre-professional undergraduate preparation necessary for post-baccalaureate enrollment in health science and law schools. Sacramento State is fully accredited by the Western Association of School-Colleges Association. Two-thirds of the faculty, which numbers more than 1,000, hold doctorate degrees.

Sacramento State is on the early semester plan with fall classes beginning in early September and ending in mid-December and spring classes beginning in late January and ending in mid-May. A comprehensive summer session, on and off-campus courses, and various institute, workshop and travel-study courses complement the regular academic year programs.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
The TOEFL is required if your native language is not English**. The minimum score for undergraduates is 510. The minimum score for graduates is 550 with the following exceptions: for Communication Studies 560, Speech Pathology 560, English 600, and International Affairs 570. Education Testing Service now offers a computer based TOEFL exam. Those students completing the computer based TOEFL will be required to earn a minimum of 180 for undergraduates, and 213 for graduate admission with the following exceptions: for Communication Studies 220, Speech Pathology 220, English 250, and International Affairs 230. Note: California State University Sacramento interprets “where English was the principal language of instruction” to mean that a school is located in a country where English is the native language (the daily medium of communication of the majority of residents is English), and that the students receive academic instruction in all subjects (except foreign language courses) at all levels of education in English.
