California State University, Sacramento
Study Abroad Program

Study in England at Middlesex University

Students who would like to study in England while still enrolled at California State University, Sacramento have an excellent opportunity through this study abroad program. There are some 500 courses at Middlesex University open to our students. All these courses form part of the degree studies of British students; none was devised for visitors. This means that our students at Middlesex share the British education experience rather than simply participating in an American program on English soil.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should have upper division standing with a declared major or classified graduate standing at this university by the time of departure, good academic records, and a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or better at the time of the application deadline. The applicant also should be prepared to accept the challenge of study in a country with an educational system different from our own. The Writing Proficiency Examination must have been passed at this university prior to departure, and, in most cases, the lower division courses of the appropriate field of study must have been completed prior to participation in this program. Applications will be accepted for one semester or one academic year. Students are required to be full-time while studying in London and, thus, take the equivalent of 15 units during each semester for undergraduates and 12 units per semester for graduates.

Please note that students applying to take art and design courses, offered at the Cat Hill campus, will have to submit a portfolio in addition to the other requirements for application.

CALENDAR

Most of the courses are taught on a semester basis at Middlesex University. The first semester begins toward the end of September and ends toward the end of December. Exams will be organized to enable semester abroad students to return home after teaching ends in December. Full year students will be expected to attend exams, which take place in January. The second semester begins toward the end of January and ends late May after exams, with about one week vacation in April. A new student induction is usually held around the third week of September and again around the fourth week of January. Study abroad participants must pay for this orientation, which in the past has cost approximately 105 pounds. Accommodation fees are not included in the induction cost and should be paid separately.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Students accepted to the program will paythe usual California State University, Sacramento fees, remain eligible for financial aid (except work/study), if otherwise qualified, and receive resident credit just as if they were attending classes at this university. (Please note that equivalency of courses falls under the jurisdiction of the academic department.) Middlesex has agreed to waive non-resident tuition, approximately 9,200 pounds (over $17,500) per year, making this a particularly attractive opportunity for participants. Students will pay for their travel to and from England, room and board, books, and incidentals. In addition, each student must have the required insurance during his or her stay in England.

The cost of a year in England is comparable to the cost of living independently in Sacramento. Expenses for a semester in England are estimated at the following: usual undergraduate fees - $1,640 (graduates would pay the graduate fee); insurance - $200; round-trip transportation - $840; room, food, and personal expenses, including clothing, entertainment, books, postage, local transportation - $7,520. Total $10,200. The estimated expenses for an academic year are about $19,560. This estimate is given for planning purposes only and is subject to changes from currency fluctuation, inflation, and fee changes. Keep in mind that the cost to obtain a passport and a student visa is not included in this estimate. Locating housing will be the individual student's responsibility although the Accommodation Services at Middlesex University will give assistance in this area.
