The Universidad de Valladolid, founded in the 13th century, is one of the oldest in Europe and the 2nd oldest university in Spain. The university boasts many beautiful buildings, among them the one containing the College of Philosophy and Letters whose facade dates to the 18th century, and the spectacular Palace of Santa Cruz, constructed in 1484. The charming city of Valladolid is the former capital of Spain. The university has a large campus with buildings dedicated to its many faculties, higher technical schools, and university schools.

Courses currently are taught in Spanish. The Universidad, however, has begun to offer a few courses taught in English. These courses can be found at http://www.relint.uva.es/relint/docenciaingles/index.asp.

Courses in “Spanish for Foreigners” are offered through the Language Centre at the Universidad de Valladolid. Our students must pay for these Language Centre courses; however, students who meet the requirement of attending 80% of all classes and who pass the final exams may be reimbursed a percentage of the fees paid. Sessions for the Language Centre courses are in September (one-month intensive program), October through December (5 hours per week), and February through May (4-5 hours per week). For more information on these courses, see the Foreign Student Guide. A student cannot have a full-time coursework load comprised solely of Language Centre classes. Thus, students must have sufficient Spanish language proficiency to take classes with native Spanish students. Language Centre classes, however, may be taken to improve Spanish language proficiency while taking regular university classes given in Spanish. Another possibility is for the student to take the intensive September session and then enter regular university classes in October. This is strongly encouraged for those students who are not at an advanced level in Spanish.

INTERNSHIPS
Internships are available to business and engineering majors who qualify. Internships may only be done after one semester is successfully completed at the Universidad de Valladolid. Thus, those students who are accepted for an academic year and who complete the fall semester with good grades may request to take an internship as part of their full-time coursework load during the spring semester. Students who are accepted for the spring semester and who complete the semester with good grades at the Universidad de Valladolid may request to have an internship for the summer. In all cases, internships are supervised by a faculty member at the Universidad de Valladolid and also by an employee at the work location. Internships are classes and require written reports as part of the assignment. Students who receive internships are paid, and the average pay in the past has been about 300 Euros per month.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should have upper division standing with a declared major or classified graduate standing at this university by the time of departure, good academic records, a 2.75 cumulative grade point average for undergraduates and a 3.0 for graduates or better at the time of the application deadline, and a minimum of two years of college-level Spanish or the equivalent. The applicant also should be prepared to accept the challenge of study in a country with an educational system different from our own. Applicants for fall participation must have taken the Writing Proficiency Examination at this university by no later than the March test date and passed it. Applicants for spring participation must have taken the Writing Proficiency Examination at this university by no later than the October test date and passed it. In most cases, the lower division courses of the appropriate field of study must have been completed prior to participation in this program. Depending on which courses the candidate wishes to take at Valladolid, there also may be other prerequisite courses that must have been taken. Applications will be accepted for one semester or one academic year. Please note that due to the mid-February end date of the fall semester in Valladolid, students who participate in the Valladolid program during the fall semester only will not return to Sacramento in time to participate in the spring semester at this university. Thus, it is better for students who want to participate in this program for one semester to apply for the spring.

Students are required to be full-time while studying in Valladolid and, thus, take the equivalent of 15 units during each semester for undergraduates and 12 units per semester for graduates.

HOUSING
There are several housing options for students in Valladolid. Locating housing is generally each individual student’s responsibility although the staff in the International Relations Office of the university will assist in this area. Options for housing usually include: individual room in a student flat, sharing kitchen, living room and bathroom; individual or shared room in the university residences; and accommodation with a Spanish family (individual room with meals). More information on housing can be found in the UV Foreign Student Guide.

CALENDAR
The Universidad de Valladolid operates on a semester system calendar similar to that of this university. Fall semester courses start around the end of September and finish towards the end of January, with exams lasting into the middle of February. The spring semester begins around the middle of February and ends in early June, with exams taking place until late June. A one-day orientation is held before classes begin. Also an optional Welcome Week is held towards the middle of September, which includes full board and lodging and a variety of activities. There is a charge for this week-long program. The Spanish language classes offered through the Language Centre are offered on a different calendar. See the Course Offerings section for more information.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Students accepted to the program will pay the usual California State University, Sacramento fees, remain eligible for financial aid (except work/study), if otherwise qualified, and receive resident credit just as if they were attending classes at this university. (Please note that equivalency of courses falls under the jurisdiction of the academic department.) Valladolid has agreed to waive non-resident tuition, except for Spanish language classes through the Language Centre, making this a particularly attractive opportunity for participants. Students will pay for their travel to and from Spain, room and board, books, and incidentals. In addition, each student must have the required insurance during his or her stay in Spain. Expenses for a semester in Valladolid are estimated at the following: usual undergraduate fees - $1,927 (graduates would pay the graduate fee), airfare - $1,225, insurance - $200, room and meals - $3,825, and incidentals (including local transportation, books, clothing, entertainment) - $1,850. Total: $9,027. The estimated expenses for an academic year are about $16,829. This estimate is given for planning purposes only and is subject to changes from currency fluctuation, inflation, and fee changes. Keep in mind that the costs to obtain a passport and a student visa are not included in this estimate.
