About Accounting Society
A Brief History
Accounting Society was established in 1980 at Sacramento State University with 22 student members. Today, it has grown to over 125 members. The organization was formerly a student chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), but has become independent as of 2008. The Accounting Society, founded by Professor Amin A. Elmallah, offers a variety of benefits to its members. These benefits include: meetings featuring an assortment of speakers and topics, professional events, office tours, social events, community service, and opportunities to develop leadership, communication, and organization skills.
Each semester begins with promotional efforts carried out during the first two weeks. The organization sets up a recruitment booth and conducts classroom speeches. The booth is usually located in the quad near the library and students are invited to stop by to learn more about the organization as well as grab free goodies provided by our sponsoring firms. Classroom speeches are conducted at many of the upper-division accounting courses and last a few minutes.
Membership is currently open to all Business students at Sacramento State who are interested in a career in accounting. Although members are not required to attend any events, participation is highly encouraged. Accounting Society uses a point system to determine the standings of its members. Points are awarded for each event a member attends and are accumulated to determine if the member has achieved Gold status by the end of the semester. Gold members returning the next semester then receive a discount on membership.
