alpha Kappa Delta Phi was established at the University of California at Berkeley in the Fall of 1989, and recognized by the College Panhellenic Association on February 7, 1990. The founding sisters of alpha Kappa Delta Phi: Susan Kim, Fannie Pon, Jill Yoshimura, and Reina Yuan started this sorority not only to promote friendship, service and scholarship in the university and community, but also to create a sorority which will add diversity and cultural awareness to the Panhellenic Council. Ten fellow sisters who complete the Charter Class of aKDPhi helped bring this dream into a reality. Since its inception, alpha Kappa Delta Phi has not only expanded statewide, but also nationwide to states such as Washington, New York, North Carolina, Virginia, Florida and Texas. For the past 15 years with 39 chapters established, alpha Kappa Delta Phi has built a strong foundation in which we encourage our sisters to strive towards leadership, scholarship and sisterhood, while always encouraging the expression of the individual.

The purpose of alpha Kappa Delta Phi is to promote sisterhood, scholarship, leadership and Asian awareness in both the University and community. The sorority offers women a cooperative and supportive network of sisters to develop and achieve individual academic and career goals. alpha Kappa Delta Phi provides an environment where sisters are able to utilize their organizational and social skills. Members undertake several major projects such as philanthropies, socials and fundraising events throughout the year, hence providing practical experiences necessary to survive and succeed in the "real world." The sorority also strives to further the awareness of Asian cultures. Through the appreciation of the cultural diversity within the Asian ethnic community, alpha Kappa Delta Phi increases awareness and encourages a deeper understanding of others. The sorority is composed of highly motivated women with diverse backgrounds, interests, and fields of study. Each woman, however, shares a strong bond of love, friendship, and sisterhood. With a supportive network of sisters, each woman can strive to fulfill her personal, academic, and career goals.

Since year of 2002, more than 180,000 women in the United States will learn for the first time that they have breast cancer, and more than 40,000 women will lose their lives. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women in America. However, early detection and prompt treatment can significantly reduce the suffering and deaths caused by this disease. alpha Kappa Delta Phi, the first and largest national Asian interest sorority, proudly promotes this as our National Philanthropy - Breast Cancer Awareness. Breast Cancer Awareness is a project dedicated to increasing public knowledge about the early detection of breast cancer. In addition to Breast Cancer Awareness, alpha Kappa Delta Phi continues to dedicate ourselves to promoting community service, not only in the University, but also throughout our surrounding communities.
