Welcome from the President of the Board
by Alan Wade
Welcome to SilverLink, the University website designed specifically for emeritus faculty and staff and other retirees of CSUS. Although the site is designed and managed by the Emeritus Association, it is intended for everyone, regardless of membership status. It represents another step in our effort to develop a greater sense of community among the constituencies of our University family. Like all websites, this one shall always be a work in progress. Thus, we encourage you to share your suggestions and to provide us with appropriate content.
Over the past two years, I have received a number of suggestions focused on mutual sharing of information about members of the Association. This web site offers a unique opportunity for sharing. Do not assume that others are not interested in what you are doing or how you feel about a particular issue. Our goal is the same as yours – to share in the lives of our friends and colleagues.
Although Emeritus Association membership is not a condition of your utilizing this site, we do hope that you will consider joining us and participate in the many benefits we offer. You can learn about the benefits of membership by exploring the links under the "ABOUT US" title on the left.
Meet the SilverLink Editors
by Steve Gregorich, Sitemaster
Hortense Simmons recently moved to Georgia, but she continues as Editor for the Silver Bulletin publication we mail out to all of you twice each year. The thousand miles between us makes no difference in today's world.
Recently, I twisted Hortense's arm a little more (a difficult thing to do at such a distance) and suggested that she be editor for the SilverLink as well as the Silver Bulletin articles. Lucky for us, she agreed. Now she is Editor for all articles submitted to the SilverLink website and the Silver Bulletin. You can learn how to submit articles for the Silver Bulletin and SilverLink by clicking on any links on the left titled "Submit Article."
Colleen Shaw worked in the College of Education for 2.5 years as my secretary when I was Associate Dean. Then she moved to the Office of Faculty and Staff Affairs for 15 years and that is likely where many of you met her. Colleen resigned from CSUS in July 2000 to accept a position at CSU Northridge as Manager of Faculty Personnel and Compensation Programs. She retired from Northridge July 2004 and moved to Lititz, Pennsylvania (Lancaster County, southeast Pennsylvania) to live near her sister.
But distance makes no difference when it comes to working on our website. Colleen is now our Graphics Editor and will work closely with Hortense Simmons to place and illustrate the articles you send to us.
Elizabeth Hanson-Smith is shown with her husband Jack on the right. Liz is the "Forums," and "Public Calendar" Editor. Liz is also preparing a "wiki" site that will be linked to this one. A "wiki" is a website in which all the members who have a password can participate by typing articles and placing photos directly onto the site. Bristling with enthusiasm, Liz maintains professional writing and teaching activities and enlivens our website with new ideas and lots of pizzazz.
Marina Estabrook is a retiree from UC Davis. But most of us know her as the wife of one of our most esteemed colleagues, Clarence "Cotton" Johnson. In the photo on the left they are shown together.
Marina is a good friend and very active in social events on our campus. She is our In Memoriam Editor, helping us to faithfully recognize our deceased colleagues in a way that is much more accurate and respectful than we have managed in the past.
Mahlon Heller retired from the Electrical & Electronic Engineering Department June, 2003. He joined the EEE Department in the fall of 1985. He has just completed FERPing spring 2008. His hobbies are stained glass art work and digital photography. He and his wife Joyce live in El Dorado Hills, CA from November through April and in Astoria, OR from May through October. They invite you to visit them in Astoria which is in the NW corner of Oregon, on the Columbia River, and cool in the summer. Mahlon works with our website as a consultant.
Be a SilverLink Editor
Don't let the list of growing staff members above cause you to feel that all the good jobs are taken. The SilverLink can always use another helping hand. If you have basic computer skills on a PC or Mac, you may find that we have a job available that you will enjoy. Website work is fun and our merry group has room for more. Send an email to the address at the bottom of any page to express your interest.
