History of Escrima
- Escrima is the traditional martial art of the Philippine Islands. Escrima is different from other martial arts forms in that students are first taught proficiency with weapons before being taught empty hand techniques. Escrima emphasizes stick and sword fighting. Rattan, an inexpensive wood from a type of palm tree in the Philippines, is the most common material for the sticks. The sticks are durable, lightweight and can be fire-hardened.
- The turbulent and conflict-wrought history and environment of the Philippines enabled escrima to develop into an efficient form of self defense. Escrima emphasizes ending the fight efficiently and quickly.
