Sacramento, CA - The ice has been cut, the skates have been sharpened, the sticks have been taped, and the false teeth have been removed. That’s right ladies and gents, it’s Hornet Hockey Season!
The Sacramento State Hornets will return to college level ice hockey this year for the first time since 2003. The Hornets will play in the Pacific Collegiate Hockey Association (PCHA), and will be a part of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). Competition will include Fresno State University, UC Davis, UC Irvine, San Diego State, UC San Diego, Northern Arizona University, CS Northridge, and College of the Canyons.
The team will consist of 18 players along with 2 red shirts. There are plenty of returning players, but some fresh faces and young talent will be thrown into the mix as well. The Hornets have already practiced a few times this season and everything is clicking so far. They will still need a bit of time to gain chemistry, but the veteran leadership will more than likely make up for that. Kyle Buckingham has been named the coach for this year’s team and will also be available to join the team at the end of the season. Each player on the team pays $550 to participate, so you know these kids are dedicated. It is also completely run by students with little or no help from the actual University.
The Hornets will begin the season on the road by traveling down to Valencia to face off against the College of the Canyons on Friday, October 6th at 7:30 pm. They will continue on the road the next night against CSU-Northridge at 7:30 pm as well. The following Sunday will be the team’s first home game against UC Irvine at Vacaville Ice Rink 9:00 pm.
All of the Hornet’s regular season home games will be played at Skatetown Ice Arena in Roseville. Along with the intense action out on the ice, you can expect plenty of good things at Skatetown. Beer, soda, pizza, a great hockey atmosphere and much more will all be at the games, so please come support your Hornets.
