Hornets Get Huge Overtime Win in Fresno

Fresno, CA - Seventy-six seconds. Doesn't seem like much time, does it? Well that's how much time the Sac State hockey team had left to tie the game up with Fresno State on Saturday. It didn't seem too promising or likely that the Hornets would pull through since they had squandered a
4-3 lead in the third period and seemed to be beaten. Then again, the Hornets had revenge on their minds.

The Hornets had let the last game against Fresno State on October 19th, their home opener, end exactly this way. They had a lead, but let Fresno State crawl back into the game. In the end, the Hornets could not recover from the hole they dug themselves and lost that game 4-5. The Hornets were determined not to let this heartbreaking scenario happen again.

With 1:16 left on the game clock, down 4-5, the Hornets' Jamison Meikle slammed home the game-tying goal to force the game into overtime. In the PCHA league, all games that are tied after three periods of play have a 5 minute overtime period. If neither team scores in the overtime period, there is a shootout. Well, the Hornets just skipped the shootout and decided to win it 5 on 5 in overtime.

Raymond Gsell scored with 36 seconds left in the overtime period which sent the Hornets flying from their bench to mob him. Gsell had picked up the puck around the point while the Hornets were in the Fresno State zone. He moved in and threw the puck at the net which somehow squirted through the mess of players and the Fresno goalie to find its way to the back of the net.

This win put the Hornets at 2-0 in the PCHA North Division and 2-1 overall. The team has a gigantic weekend ahead when they host UC San Diego Friday, November 2nd and then San Diego State on Saturday, November 3rd. Both games were listed on the schedule with a start time of 7:00 pm, but they have each been changed. Friday night's game will start at 7:15 pm and the Saturday night game will begin at 6:45 pm.

Please come out and support your Hornets, as they will need all the home ice advantage they can get this weekend. T-shirts will be for sale and beer is served at the rink. Tickets are $3 for Sac State Students and $5 for non-students.
