Taking Care of Me

Adrienne Aquino

Remember how it felt to be the
first to color with your brand
the way new fat Crayola crayons in red
the wax and blue? those same colors against
is rough the white butcher paper is exactly
against the way his clothes looked against
the white the white cloud backdrop of
the way Sangasett Bay jeans hanging off his
his clothes body with a red T-shirt blown up
might feel against the contours of his forty-one-
if you ran year-old torso that the way he looked
your hands as he stood on the cape facing
gently the water the morning I finally
across gave up our battle with cancer he
his image stood there his feet shoulder-width
apart hands on his hips looking
as though he was getting ready
to disappear from the world in
which he was born I
could've taken him with me but he
told me to go first he'd stay behind
to make sure I was well on my way
without encountering any problems
with no problems he'd follow when I
was already gone
