The Extra Credit Problems

Bob Stanley

You find yourself on the moon with no atmosphere.
Before you suffocate, you have to calculate
given the specific gravity g, and the altitude a
what was your great-grandfather like?
Did he really sell vegetables on the streets
from a cart? And how did he manage to love
your great grandmother, did he tell his sons
he loved them, and did he cheat at cards?

Sometimes things happen inside a family the way
a blender disrupts the TV reception when it runs
on the highest setting, pulse, or maybe frappe.
Using both the wave and particle theory approach
describe how these sympathetic vibrations
move through us, as we move through them,
how much time does your family spend in front
of reality? the television? Contrast. Compare.

Ask yourself the questions that aren't on the test.
Do you think they will make the rest of your life
understandable? Are we graded on a curve?
What is the derivation of the word transcript?
In your dream you hear the names of the years: freshman,
sophomore, junior, senior. And one day you will wake up
and ask yourself: What were the extra credit problems?
Could it have mattered? and Is this the last semester?
