The Asilomar Excursion
Oct. 11-13, 2008

Forty-five Renaissance
members enjoyed three days of beautiful weather, fun and
educational activities and gorgeous views (not to mention
great companions!) on the fall excursion to Asilomar and the
Monterey area. The excursion committee did a fabulous job of
planning everything.
The group spent two nights
at Asilomar, a state park that's also a conference center
and provides not only comfortable rooms and tasty meals, but
also an incredible location on its own beach.
On the trip there, the
group stopped in San Juan Bautista to visit the historic
mission (right on the San Andreas Fault), stroll around the
picturesque town and have lunch. At another short stop in
downtown Monterey, they strolled through a street fair and
saw seals, sea lions, pelicans and an otter mother and pup
at Monterey Pier.
Sunday was devoted to the
Monterey Bay Aquarium, a fabulous place to experience the
best of the bay and the Pacific Ocean. The day ended with an
old-fashioned campfire and sing-a-long, organized by Mike
Sands, and complete with 'smores.
On the way back Monday,
the group learned all about John Steinbeck at the museum
devoted to that famous writer in his home town of Salinas.
