The Spring Brunch! To Register Click HERE
Linda Martin, Vice President
Sunday, May 1--a good day to celebrate the vibrance of springtime and the portent of long summer days to come!

Plan to join your friends and colleagues on Sunday May 1 at 11 am for the Association's annual Champagne Brunch at the Sacramento State Alumni Center.

Find out what others have been doing lately. Maybe they have traveled, or maybe they have finally checked a few things off the “To Do” list. Or maybe they have done something that they have been waiting for you to ask them about. And learn what interesting escapades they have planned for the future!

What would you like to tell them about your endeavors?

You will also have the opportunity to enjoy the talents of current and former CSUS students in the Arts. Our live music will be performed by violinists Sarena Hsu (2012), Laura Rubenstein-Salzedo (BA, 2010) and cellist Courtney Castaneda (MA, 2009) who are looking forward to adding the music they love to play to the lively atmosphere. A large display of visually stunning and intriguing photographs, enthusiastically provided by undergraduate and graduate students in the Photography Program in the Department of Design will be available for you to saunter past and ponder.

Chef Mike Miller is planning a filling midday meal and our own Viticulture Aficionado has selected an accompanying Italian Prosecco to delight the palate as well, for those who enjoy a bit of something bubbly.

And . . . oh yes. . . there will be door prizes, too, which have been generously provided by local businesses who endorse the Association’s mission to support CSUS students.

Now that you know what we have planned, you won’t want to miss this. Invite a guest. Reach out to other retiree friends to come and reconnect with colleagues. It's going to be a lovely day.

Costs are $35 for a member of the Association and $35 for the member's guest, and $45 for nonmembers. Notice how, by joining right now, you can immediately derive your first benefit of becoming a member! You can join the association and register for the Spring Brunch on the same form by clicking HERE.

Remember that you won’t receive an invitation or registration form in the mail so register right now for the Spring Brunch by clicking HERE.

Friends of the Library Book Club
by Louellyn Lower

The group has decided to choose books four times a year rather than for the whole year -- so that we would really be more current and able to respond to enticing reviews and best sellers. Even retirees want to "keep up"! So our choices for the next three months of 2011 are:

  • April: 13 Gold Boy, Emerald Stoies by Yiyun Li.
  • May 11: Prague, by Arthur Phillips
  • June 8: The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration, by Isabel Wilkerson.

Other books that received a general consensus to be added to our future reading list were: Don DeLillo: Underworld; Jane Smiley: Private Life; Joseph O'Neill: Netherland: Richard Wrangham: Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human; Tracy Kidder: Strength in What Remains; Barack Obama: Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance; Andre Dubus: Townie: David Brooks: The Social Animal: the Hidden Sources of Love, Character and Achievement; Lucette Lagnado: The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit.

We are now meeting on the second Wednesday of the month, rather than on the second Thursday. Place is decided on a monthly basis. We meet in group members' homes. Anyone interested in joining the group can contact me: Louellyn Lower at llower67@comcast.net or 916 456-5879.

Sacramento Saturday Club http://sacramentosaturdayclub.org/
by John Cozza, Sacramento State Pianist

The Sacramento Saturday Club was organized on December 9, 1893. It is the oldest musical organization in Sacramento - and one of the oldest west of the Rockies.

When established in 1893, the Sacramento Saturday Club's fundamental mission was to promote and sustain the Sacramento area's need and love for the greatest of the arts -- music. It does this by providing monthly concert performances in member's homes and supporting developing young musicians.

The Sacramento Saturday Club awards scholarship money to the area's talented music students, both instrumental and vocal, with the goal of furthering their musical careers. It also provides ample opportunities for its members to meet fellow lovers of music, listeners and performers alike, on a social level.

The objectives of the Club are to 1) administer a scholarship program fofr the support of promising young musicians; 2) stimulate public interest in local music and musicians; and 3) improve the cultural life of the community.

The Saturday Club welcomes visitors and guests to their monthly meetings and encourages them to become members, either as a performer or as an associate member (non-performing member.)

We are a non-profit organization and we welcome your contributions. We would be delifhted to put 100% of your tax-deductible donation into our scholarship fund., which we distribute annually. You can learn more about the Sacramento Saturday Club at this link: http://sacramentosaturdayclub.org/
