The theme for the conference was Relevancies: Public Anthropology in a Globalizing World. Anthropology continues to exercise an ever-growing influence in the public arena. The field thus faces the ongoing challenge of demonstrating its utility and relevance within a competitive marketplace of ideas and practices. Moreover, within the academy, new perspectives that have emerged from such cross-disciplinary, hybrid specializations as Cultural, Women’s, and Ethnic Studies fuel a running dialog about anthropology's own distinctive contributions to the social and human sciences. How anthropologists meet the challenges of staying relevant in the public and academic domains will determine the evolution of the discipline over the coming decades.
