WESTERN POLITICAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION
ANNUAL AWARDS

A. At the 2009 Annual Meeting, the Association anticipates the following seven awards:

The $250 Dissertation Award for the best doctoral dissertation completed at a university within the regional groupings of the WPSA between July 1 and June 30 of the previous academic year.

The $500 Pi Sigma Alpha Award for the best paper presented at the 2008 WPSA meeting.

The $250 Betty Nesvold Women and Politics Award for the best paper on women and politics presented at the 2008 WPSA meeting.

The $250 WPSA Best Paper Award on Latino/Latina Politics for an outstanding paper on Latino and/or Latina politics.

The $250 Award by Committee on the Status of Blacks for an outstanding paper discussing issues and problems that concern most Black Americans.

The $250 Charles Redd Award for Best Paper on the Politics of the American West for the best paper on the politics of the American West presented at the 2008 Annual Meeting. Papers may cover a broad range of topics—governance, policy, culture, politics—and may compare the West to other regions. The Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University and the WPSA jointly offer this award.

The $1,000 Political Research Quarterly Best Article Award for the best article published in the Political Research Quarterly during the prior calendar year.

B. The following guidelines are to be noted by persons submitting work:

  1. With the exception of the PRQ Award, no previously published material is to be submitted.
  2. Review processes for each award are conducted by award committees consisting of at least three political scientists. The review process is anonymous.
  3. WPSA awards carry a monetary prizes determined by the Executive Council, or, in the case of the PRQ award, determined by the PRQ Editors.
  4. If desired by the author, all papers receiving WPSA awards shall be published in the Political Research Quarterly. To be published in the PRQ, the essay must contain no material which has been previously published elsewhere; be submitted to the editor(s) of the PRQ within three months of the receipt of the award; and meet normal publication standards of content and style as determined by the editor(s) of the PRQ. The editor(s) may send the manuscript for further external review.
  5. Winners of the Awards are announced at the Annual Meeting of the WPSA.
