First Year Orientation
Welcome to Sacramento State!
Orientation is a REQUIRED two-day program for all new first year students. Orientation is designed to help new students get off to the right start by helping them learn about academic requirements, meeting with faculty major advisors and learning about campus programs and services. Students cannot register for classes until they attend Orientation. Please note that First Year Orientation is a two-day program and students are required to attend BOTH days.
Students who are admitted into EOP (Educational Opportunity Program) attend a separate Orientation session on Tuesday June 27 & 28, 2017.
F.R.O.S.H. Night: Students - are you looking for a place to stay during your Orientation session and experience a sample of campus life? Join us for F.R.O.S.H. NIGHT. (F.R.O.S.H. Night is only avilable to students - not thier parents or guests). This is an excellent opportunity to meet new classmates regardless of whether you will live on campus or commute this fall.
First Year Orientation takes place June 29 thru August 3, 2017. For specific dates by major click here. Reservations for Orientation will begin April 1, 2017. The deadline to register for Orientation is June 16, 2017.
What Happens at Orientation?
During Orientation, students will meet with major and General Education advisors. During these sessions, advisors will discuss academic policies and course selection. By the end of Orientation, students will know university policies and deadlines, academic requirements, campus programs and services, and be familiar with the campus.

Pay online (see CashNet below) OR by sending a check or money order with a copy of your confirmation page to: Sacramento State, New Student Orientation, 6000 J Street, Sacramento, CA 95819. Make checks payable to Sacramento State. We cannot accept cash or credit cards the day of your Orientation. Cash can be accepted at the Bursar's Office prior to your Orientation session. To confirm your orientation date, orientation fees are due within seven days of placing your reservation.
Fees for Orientation cover the cost of staffing, lunch, parking, and program materials. Financial aid does not apply to Orientation fees.
Please note: Refunds can be given only if you request a cancellation in writing at least two business days in advance of your assigned date. Email your written cancellation at email@example.com. Refunds will be processed once a month. For changes in reservations, call (916) 278-7841.
If applicable, ELM/EPT placement tests must be taken and scored BEFORE you can attend Orientation. Out-of-state students should consult ELM/EPT exemptions for testing details.
Early Start is a new enrollment requirement for some Fall 2017 First-time Freshmen (FTF). Test scores determine whether a student is required to participate in Early Start. The CSU wants to help first-time freshmen applicants get an "Early Start" toward their preparation for college level work beginning in Fall 2017 new freshmen who need extra preparation to be ready for college-level English and/or math must start the process no later than the summer before their first term. Requests for sign language interpreters, real time captioners, materials in alternative formats, or ADA accommodations should be made at least 10 working days in advance by contacting the Services to Students with Disabilities office at (916) 278-6955 voice or (916) 278-7239 TTY.
All scholarship and/or recruited student-athletes are required to participate in University Orientation Programs. Student-athletes must attend Orientation as undeclared majors and choose from sessions B, C or D. Student-athletes and their parents/guardians will attend a 90-minute presentation specific to athletes' academic needs. Student-athletes should also contact their athletic coaches regarding additional summer academic/life skillsprograms scheduled for August. Note: This University Orientation requirement applies to recruited and/or schoarship athletes participating in NCAA-sponsored Intercollegiate Athletic Department sports.
Student veterans are required to attend New Student Orientation and are encuraged to attend orientation on Thursday June 1st from 8:00am - 4:30pm. Student veterans will obtain information regarding General Education and major course requirements, lunch, tour of campus and will register for fall courses. The Veteran Success Center (VSC) staff will be present to conduct a specific presentation of their services, assist in filing VA claim forms for education benefits, and answer general questions. Students who are unable to attend this session will need to register for one of the First Year Orientation sessions between June 29 - August 3. Details on those sessions can be found on this website.
Students will meet with the director of the Honors program, obtain information regarding General Education and major course requirements, lunch, tour of campus and will register for fall courses. Students who are in need of child care (ages 1-5 years) during Orientation may arrange for free child care from the ASI Children's Center. This is based on space availability and requests for care should be made at least seven working days in advance. For arrangements call the ASI Children's Center at (916) 278-6216. Child care will not be available on Saturdays.
