Campus Furlough Plan: Update from David Wagner (7/31/09)

The Chancellor’s Office today has approved our request for two designated staff/management furlough days for the next two Fridays – August 7 and 14. We anticipate approval of the remainder of our plan later next week.

On August 7 and 14, however, the campus will be open but with only limited services available, and most offices will be closed. On August designated furlough days, summer and YRO classes will still be held, conferences scheduled will continue, essential services will continue to be provided, and employees not subject to a furlough plan will report to work as normally scheduled.

The intent of such designated furlough days is that most staff and management employees subject to furloughs will have that day off as a furlough day. Nevertheless, if management determines that operational needs of the unit require some employees to work on a designated furlough day, affected employees will be consulted about determining an alternate day in the same pay period to take as a furlough day.

The only restriction on an alternate day is that it cannot fall in a week with another approved furlough day. Please remember that during the week with a furlough day, exempt staff and managers lose exempt status and become non-exempt employees. During the week with a furlough day, it is expected that no employee will work more than 32 hours.

Although complete details of an implementation plan for the recently approved faculty furlough proposal has not been completed, we encourage 12-month faculty to request August 7 and 14 as their two furlough days for August. Additional information will be sent to those 12-month faculty.
