Message to the Campus from President Alexander Gonzalez (6/16/09)

To All Members of the Campus Community:

In light of the challenges we are facing caused by the state budget, I want to reassure everyone that we will do everything we can to protect both the quality academic programs we offer to students and maintain the workforce that allows us to offer such a high level of service.

Unfortunately, we do not yet know the amount of the cut in state funding to the California State University system. The latest estimate was a $583 million reduction, but Governor Schwarzenegger and the Legislature have much work to do to balance the state budget; the eventual cut could be between $400 million and $700 million. While I understand that not having a firm budget number produces anxiety, it would be irresponsible for our campus to lock in plans for a hypothetical number that could change from day to day. 

When we know the full extent of the reduction to Sacramento State, I will work with the University Budget Advisory Committee to craft the campus budget in the best way possible for the 2009-10 fiscal year. That process will remain open and transparent.

Although the Chancellor’s Office has been meeting with collective bargaining groups, no decisions have been made on furloughs or other labor issues.

I know this unprecedented level of uncertainty is difficult for everyone. As such, I will be sending weekly updates to you with the latest budget developments. My next message will follow my meeting next week with the Chancellor and my fellow campus presidents.
