SACRAMENTO STATE BUDGET

Message to the Campus from President Alexander Gonzalez (6/25/09)

To All Members of the Campus Community:

This week, I met with Chancellor Reed and my fellow campus presidents to discuss the massive budget cuts facing the California State University system. We considered alternatives that would allow us to address systemwide cuts in the hundreds of millions of dollars while maintaining the quality of our academic programs and protecting the workers who allow us to offer that outstanding level of service.

No action plan was finalized, as we still do not know how much the cut will be. However, following talks with the Chancellor’s Office and votes among their memberships, two labor unions have agreed to negotiate furloughs. The CSU system has proposed two-day-a-month furloughs for all CSU employees (including management and executives) to safeguard as many jobs as possible.

Additionally, CSU payroll checks are being issued as normal.

The CSU Board of Trustees is holding a special board meeting July 7 to consider options for dealing with the budget. On July 21 at the Board’s regular meeting, the trustees may adopt specific budget actions at the systemwide and campus levels.

When we know the full extent of Sacramento State’s share of the budget cuts, I will work with the University Budget Advisory Committee to minimize their impact on campus. That process will continue to be open and transparent.

All budget news will continue to be posted on Public Affairs’ Budget Central page at http://www.csus.edu/pa/budget. I also will send a message next week with the latest updates.

Again, I thank you for your patience, hard work and input.

Sincerely,

Alexander Gonzalez
President
