Middle and high school students get an early look at Sacramento State and learn about programs that can help them as they prepare for college life.
 
(Narrator:) This is “Focus” from the campus of Sacramento State.

(Voice:) “Make sure you take one of these and a flier on the end, OK?”

(Jim Finnerty reporting:) Sacramento State’s annual College and Community Information Fair offers middle and high school students insight and assistance on obtaining a college education.

(Doris Tormes, Sacramento State admissions counselor:) “It’s very competitive out there, so we want to prepare them well to be successful.”

(Voice:) “I am a parenting professional.”

(Finnerty:) The event offers financial and career workshops for parents and students. Stacey Powell brought her daughter, Dakota.

(Stacey Powell, college fair attendee:) “I hope for just a further interest and intrigue, and to start getting excited about it. She gets to hang out in a different environment than her K-through-8 school that she’s always gone to.”

(Finnerty:) Breakout sessions had career information on everything from theater to science to art.

(Dakota Walker, eighth grade student:) “I really enjoyed the speaker in the theater program. He was very spunky and upbeat, and he caught my attention.”

(Finnerty:) Ty Walker-Belton and her husband have four boys in grades five through nine.

(Tywanda Walker-Belton, college fair attendee:) “An issue with us, because we have four boys, is financing. So, I wanted to get information about that and also allow them to kind of discover some things, some careers that they might want to be interested in.”

(Finnerty:) Every year, more than a thousand students from some 150 schools take part in the college fair, exploring opportunities that can dramatically change their lives.

(Tormes:) “We have so many students who have graduated and successfully achieved their goals in completing a career. So, we have a lot of college graduates because of this special program.”
