Donor David Steinberg Tour of Sacramento State

Sacramento State recently received a gift from the estate of David Steinberg estimated at $2.5 million.  The gift will endow the Voula Steinberg Memorial Mathematics Programs Fund in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

The Voula Steinberg Memorial Mathematics Programs Fund will support scholarships that encourage students to pursue careers as mathematics teachers at the secondary level.  Steinberg, who passed away in November, had been an ardent supporter of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. See video of Steinberg and scholarship recipients.

“Over the past several years, I worked with Mr. Steinberg to help him achieve his vision of honoring the memory of his beloved wife Voula Steinberg and her legacy of excellence in the teaching of mathematics,” says Professor Doraiswamy Ramachandran, Mathematics and Statistics. “Mr. Steinberg was a warm and caring person who was passionate about helping to create outstanding teachers of mathematics.”

The Fund has already made an impact on numerous students’ lives.  Carol Wilson, a multiple-time recipient of the Voula Steinberg Memorial Scholarships says, “There have been several semesters where I’ve won the scholarships and where I would otherwise not have been able to pay for school.  Through Mr. Steinberg, I was also able to get a job this summer teaching at Academic Talent Search, which was my first teaching experience.”

The Fund aims to engage students from the middle school level through high school and Sacramento State - all with the intent of creating a pipeline of talented mathematics teachers for our region’s high schools. This Fund supports the University’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiative, which promotes graduating more students in STEM areas in order to meet regional workforce needs.
