There’s a smarter way to deliver electricity to homes and businesses, says Emir Jose Macari, dean of Sacramento State’s College of Engineering and Computer Science.
Macari heads the California Smart Grid Center at Sacramento State, which develops technological solutions to help utility companies respond to peak electrical power demands.
“New advanced metering systems allow utilities to more efficiently provide electrical service to homes and businesses by providing two-way electronic communications between consumers and suppliers,” Macari says.
The California Smart Grid Center also develops curriculum to educate engineering and computer science students interested in smart grid careers.
“Electrical utilities predict that as many as 50 percent of their technical staff will retire within the next five to 10 years,” Macari says. “This training program will give displaced workers the opportunity to change careers to the power industry by providing scholarships, continuing education courses and certificate programs.”
