Hornets Scrimmage, Show New Uniforms, Welcome Little Hornets
Fans got a first look at the 2011 Hornet football team – and its new uniforms – as Sac State had its first scrimmage of the preseason Saturday, Aug. 20.
“We’ve got a lot of kids back,” said fifth-year coach Marshall Sperbeck, whose Hornets are ranked 24th in The Sports Network/Fathead.com Football Championship Subdivision preseason poll. “We were 6-5 last year and played everybody pretty close. We’ve just got to go win those close games and we have high expectations for this team.”
Quarterback Jeff Fleming echoed his coach’s sentiment.
“We feel we are going to have a tremendous year,” Fleming said. “We’re all really excited. We have a lot of faith in our offense and our defense. We’re just ready to get out there and get after it.”
The Hornets also unveiled new, Adidas-designed uniforms. The new look is not a major departure but does feature the team name “HORNETS” more prominently than the previous across the front of the uniform and eliminates the racing stripes down the side of the jersey and pants.
Following the scrimmage, the Hornets opened the field to the public for “Bee a Hornet” day. The event, held for the second time, allowed kids on the field to engage in drills and get autographs from players.
