About Photocopy & Technical Support

The Photocopy & Technical Support Department at Sacramento State is designed to provide the campus community with high quality digital copiers while saving time, effort and money for both the University and your individual department. These copiers can be set up to be accessed by OneCard, Department Cards, or copier codes. Our department provides everything needed to make copies. We not only provide the copier, at no out of pocket cost to your department, but everything that the copier would need including paper, all toner and supplies, maintenance, access equipment, and billing services for one low cost per copy.

The cost for our copier service is minimal with no large initial expenditures needed when purchasing most office equipment. Currently, whether you are using a OneCard, a Department Card, or monthly billing, you are only charged the rate of 5¢ per copy. Once again, this is the total cost of everything; copier, paper, toner and supplies, maintenance.

The Photocopy & Technical Support Department currently has almost 200 copiers located in administrative, academic, and public areas, many of which have convenient OneCard and Department Card access, and the copiers in the library and in the lobby of Lassen Hall also have vending units to accept cash for copies. Other copiers have code access, or are sole source copiers.

Actually, digital ‘copiers’ are not copiers at all. They are only referred to as copiers since they appear to perform the same function as an analog copier. In reality, a digital ‘copier’ (actually known as a Digital Imaging Unit or DIU) does not produce copies at all. They produce originals in the same way a laser printer produces originals.  A Digital Imaging Unit is actually a digital scanner and a high speed laser printer connected together and housed in one machine. DIU’s operate on the ‘scan once, print many’ principle, which offer a variety of benefits. The scanner only needs to scan the original documents once, no matter how many copies you want to make. This means the user can walk away with the original document while printing continues; it also makes for a quieter copying process and improved hardware reliability due to the fewer moving parts. The digital scanner is able to do this by converting the reflected light waves into individual, discrete units of information. A charged-coupler device (CCD) "looks" at the black and white image and designates every black dot (presence of an image) as "1", and every white dot (absence of an image) as "0". These dots are called pixels - the smallest units of a graphic image. In this way, any scanned image can be converted into a digital signal and stored into memory. Once converted and stored in the digital ‘copier’s’ memory, the data can be manipulated and enhanced by the image processing unit (IPU) before being sent to a laser unit, where the laser converts the data into an original printout. The digital ‘copier’ takes the data from the image processing unit and produces originals one completed set at a time.  The finished sets are then stacked, set-by-set, in the finishing (sorting) unit. This allows users to make very long, non-stop runs of multi-page sets that are not limited by a bin capacity, as is the case in analog machines with sorters.

As our Copier Program continues to grow with the changing campus needs and technology, it is now possible to integrate our digital copiers into the campus network, allowing the copier to also function as a high speed laser printer and/or scanner. We are dedicated to providing state-of-the-art copier equipment, convenient OneCard and Department Card access systems, and outstanding service and support to the campus community.
