ANNOUNCEMENT OF TENURE-TRACK POSITION IN PHYSICS WITH EMPHASIS IN ASTRONOMY

California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) invites applications from individuals interested in joining our dynamic and growing faculty. With a current student population in excess of 28,000, CSUS is one of the larger campuses in the 23 campus California State University system, the largest system of higher education in the nation. The University is organized around seven colleges. There are approximately 1,700 faculty who provide programs of instruction leading towards Bachelor’s degrees in 60 disciplines and Master’s degrees in 40 disciplines and one joint doctoral program.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is seeking applicants with a background in astronomy with a strong interest in teaching undergraduate astronomy and physics as well as the ability to incorporate students into their research program. Our Department in particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates with an interest in public outreach and science education.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, or physics (with a concentration in astronomy) is required. Postdoctoral experience is required.
Knowledge and Abilities:
Applicants must be able to teach undergraduate astronomy courses, both introductory and advanced, and to incorporate undergraduate students into their research programs. Applicants should also be able to teach introductory physics courses. The successful applicant will (1) teach astronomy and physics; (2) develop research projects suitable for student participation; and (3) develop a research program involving competition for external grants. A strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research is expected and the ability to work with a diverse student population is essential. The successful candidate will display a strong interest in the pedagogy of astronomy and physics.
Experience:
Teaching experience is required. The applicant’s research experience should establish qualification for developing new curricula in astronomy and for ongoing professional activities, including research and professional associations. Demonstrated interest in developing independent-study and senior projects for undergraduate students in physics is expected.
Assignment:
Duties for the successful applicant will include: teaching introductory and advanced astronomy and physics courses, involving undergraduate students in research projects and developing departmental facilities and programs. The appointee will be expected to participate in a substantial revision of our teacher preparation program. The appointee will be expected to pursue scholarly activity including seeking external funding, and to serve institutional needs through committee assignments, advising, program development, public outreach, etc.
Appointment:
Probationary appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 27, 2008. Initial salary range: $46,512 to $58,632 (depending upon experience) plus fringe benefits. Due to budgetary considerations, there is no expectation of startup funds.
