The Sacramento State Chapter, chartered during the 1963-64 academic year, is the 84thchapter of the Society and the University’s oldest honor society. Chapters are now located on more than 300 campuses in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. At the national level, this honor society is also the oldest and most selective honor society in the United States that recognizes excellence in all academic disciplines. Phi Kappa Phi, along with Phi Beta Kappa, is a charter member of the Association of College Honor Societies. Today, Phi Kappa Phi has more than 1,000,000 members in all parts of the world. Over 1,200 faculty and staff volunteer their time to serve as officers for local chapters. The Society is also responsible for over $1,000,000 in national and local scholarships awarded every biennium.
The primary objectives of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi are to promote the pursuit of excellence in all fields of higher education and to recognize outstanding achievement by students, faculty and others through election to membership and through various awards for distinguished achievement. The Society is convinced that recognizing and honoring those persons of good character who have excelled in scholarship, in whatever field, will stimulate others to strive for excellence. Members are elected from all areas of the university on the basis of academic excellence. Membership is by invitation only: students must meet GPA and completed unit requirements in order to be eligible. New members are initiated each Spring.
