Assessment

Assessment at CSUS takes place on two parallel tracks. Institutional assessment addresses the entire Strategic Plan and is coordinated by the Council for University Planning which is chaired by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and staffed by the Vice President’s office. Academic program assessment derives from the program review process that is coordinated by Vice President for Academic Affaris and involves the Faculty Senate Curriculum Policies Committee. Program review is linked to the Strategic Plan through the Academic Programs theme of the Plan.

Each track has its own set of assessment documentation based on the University’s “culture of learning.” At the institutional level, a comprehensive assessment paper is prepared for each Strategic Plan theme approximately every five years. The paper is organized into key topics that derive from the text of the Strategic Plan. The Office of Institutional Research prepares each paper by looking for data and information from all available sources that pertain to the theme and its key topics. These sources include surveys of faculty, staff, students, and the community, as well as basic institutional data. The Council for University Planning reviews the theme assessment papers to track our progress toward our goals and to identify specific “objectives” that help refine our short-term planning and assessment activities.

At the academic program level, each department and university-wide program prepares a self-study that includes an assessment plan and evaluation of data relevant to the unit’s stated goals and desired outcomes. These documents are reviewed by an external consultant and an internal program review team as part of the program review process.
