Faculty Service
All full-time Art faculty serve on one or two departmental standing
committees that meet throughout the academic year, and also are
involved with at least one ad hoc committee that may meet for a
more limited period (see Chart below).
We have five standing committees: Budget, Curriculum, Gallery, Graduate,
and Safety (the chairs of these five committees, and the Department
chair, comprise the Executive Committee). Minutes of the committees
are kept in a notebook in the Art office. Effective this Fall, we
also plan to maintain a separate notebook for each of the standing
committees. This will make it easier for a committee to build upon
the work of past semesters. We are continuing to struggle with one
basic problem: finding times that are convenient for all committee
members to meet. We have very diverse teaching schedules, and recently
there has been no two-hour period on any weekday when someone is
not in a classroom. Various solutions have been considered for this
problem, which also affects the scheduling of our
general faculty meetings, but none seems to be fully satisfactory.
For the past two years, we have held our general faculty meetings
at the same time, but on a different day, each month (i.e., at 6:00
p.m. on a Wednesday in March, 6:00 on a Thursday in April, etc.).
We also have started holding annual, full-day retreats (2002, 2003,
2004).
Recent and/or continuing ad hoc committees within the Department include the ARTP committee (responsible for evaluating the probationary tenure-track faculty and for evaluating, selecting, and ranking all part-time faculty), Faculty Hiring Committees (we have conducted one or more faculty searches each academic year since 1999), Assessment Committee, General Education Review Committee, Strategic Action Committee, Art Building/Complex Committee, FMI Review Committee, PSSI Review Committee, Visiting Artists Committee, and Student Recruitment/Retention Committee. Some of these ad hoc committees are formed each academic year; others were created for specific purposes and are now suspended (e.g., the FMI and PSSI Review Committees).
Many Art faculty also serve (or have served) on College and/or
University committees, including the Arts and Letters Budget and
Curriculum Committee, Arts and Letters ARTP Committee, School of
the Arts Advisory Committee for the MA in Arts in Education, Single
Subject Advisory Committee, Photography Major Committee (involving
faculty from the Departments of Art and Design), Fulbright Review
Committee, International Programs Review Committee, CSUS Student
Research Competition Committee (judge, 2004), CSUS Research and
Creative Activity Award Program Committee (application reviewer,
2004), Woman’s Study Program Review Committee, CSUS Committee
on Diversity and Equity, Serna Center Advisory Committee, and the
CSUS Service Learning Scholars Group. Members of the Art faculty also have represented the Department, College
or University at meetings and conferences off campus. We have represented
CSUS on the Academic Council on International Programs (on-going:
Catherine Turrill has just been reappointed for a second term as
the CSUS representative), on the CSU Summer Arts Planning Committee,
and at NCATE and other education-related conferences or committees
(such as the State’s Visual and Performing Arts Curriculum
Framework and Criteria Committee, in 2001; the K-16 Partnership
and Student Success Conference and the Campus Compact Intermediate
Institute, both also in 2001; and the CSU Assessment in Art and
Design Conference, in 2000). Art faculty also participate regularly
in special meetings and conferences at CSUS, such as the annual
LEAP conference, sponsored by the Sacramento Consortium of Art and
Design Educators (for information, see the website: http://www.csus.edu/design/leap/about/default.html),
the Arts Articulation Conference
(sponsored by the School of the Arts in March 2001), and two Art
Educators’ Retreats (hosted by SOTA in March and April 2002).
The members of the Art faculty have a significant record of community
service of all types, much of it related to our professional expertise
as artists, scholars, and educators. We contribute works of art
to local fund-raising auctions, serve as jurors for local art competitions;
serve as panelists for the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission;
give public lectures and/or workshops at local schools, libraries,
and other
institutions (including the Crocker Art Museum); and are active
members of local arts organizations and institutions. Some of the
lectures and workshops conducted by members of our faculty also
have contributed to the fund-raising efforts of the sponsoring agency.
Probably our most active participant in community activities is
Ricardo Favela, whose teaching and service are closely interrelated,
given his responsibility for the Barrio Arts Program at CSUS. In
addition, as a founding member of the RCAF, he is involved in many
art exhibits and collateral activities that serve the local community.
In her role as Coordinator of the Single Subject Program in Art,
Anna Wagner-Ott attends meetings of local school boards and other
community organizations concerned with primary and secondary education.
In addition, she is an advisory member for the Sacramento County
Arts Espirit de Corps, a “team of educational leaders committed
to supporting Arts Education for all students.” Finally, as
mentioned earlier, both she and Dan Frye incorporate significant
service learning components into their Art Education classes. Effective
in 2003, probationary tenure-track faculty can serve on hiring committees,
but a simple majority of the committee must be tenured (i.e., on
a 3-person committee, only one member can be untenured). This policy
was set by the Art Department.
