Communication Studies Program Recognition

Leah Vande Berg, communication studies, has received the National Communication Association Mass Communication Division 2004 Service Award.

Dr Ah Yun has been part of research teams that have received support from the Wisconsin Department of Public Health (for anti-smoking research), the Sacramento Criminal Justice Cabinet (for research on minority confinement in the Sacramento County justice system), the California Department of Transportation - Caltrans (for research on improving a model for construction of bridges and repairing roads), and the Henry J. Kaiser Foundation (for research on television talk shows).

Harlene Adams, Communication Studies, was awarded first place in non-fiction in the 18th annual Focus on Writers Contest sponsored by the Sacramento Library, in partnership with Sacramento State, for her essay "Language and the Tragedy of Indifference."

MARLENE M. VON FRIEDERICHS-FITZWATER, communication studies, was selected as the recipient of this year’s lifetime achievement award from the Sacramento Public Relations Association. She received
more than 60 nominations from students and alumni.

Bill Owen , communication studies, has won first place in the John Crook Memorial contest for best unpublished senryu poetry sponsored by the journal haijinx . He was elected president of the Central Valley Haiku Club. He also has been selected as a featured poet at the Haiku Poets of Northern California annual "Two Autumns" reading in August and commemorative book. Posted the week of February 3, 2003

Diego Bonilla, communication studies, was awarded the 2004 Doctoral Prize S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications by Syracuse University for exemplifying excellence in scholarship and research. Bonnilla's dissertation is titled "The medium is the measure of itself. Using tracking data for deductive and inductive analysis of the users of an interactive experience and their behavior" and can be found at www.aspaceoftime.net/TheMedium.htm .
