Awards

Robin Datel, Geography, received this year's Outstanding Educator Award from the California Geographical Society. She received the award at the society's annual meeting April 22-24, 2005, in Yosemite National Park.

Julie Cidell, who has just joined the Geography faculty this year (Fall 2004), brings with her a record of quality scholarship. In 2001 she received the AAG (Association of American Geographers) Transportation Geography Specialty Group Master’s Thesis Award, while in 2004 she was recipient of the AAG Transportation Geography Specialty Group Dissertation Award. In addition, since 2003 she has published two articles in the Journal of Transportation Geography (one forthcoming) and one in Critical Planning Journal.

Ronaldo I. Caluza, geography student, won the President's Award for Outstanding Student Poster Presentation at the annual meeting of the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers in San Luis Obispo for his poster presentation, "Exploring the Presence of Filipinos In South Sacramento." Caluza was sponsored by professor Robin Datel, and received funding from the Academically Related Activities and Student Academic Development programs through Academic Affairs.

Geography student Rich Crosby was pictured on the cover of the March 2004 issue of Comstock's Business Magazine . The photograph shows him working as a facilitator at one of SACOG's recent regional planning forums. Rich is one of several geography majors just completing or in the midst of internships with SACOG.
