2/04 Children's Center at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento. Co-presented along with a pediatric dietitian and nurse practioner The Ins and Outs of Childhood Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes to physicians and nurses. Provided continuing medical education to physicians and nurses in private practice on the effects of overweight children and the related health concerns faced by practioners and the importance of early detection and treatment. Discussed screening tools, diagnostics tests, patient interaction, and evaluation of patient readiness to make changes.
11/03 Sutter Children's Center: Diabetes – Let's Make it Simple. Co-presented along with a pediatric dietitian Childhood Overweight in the School Setting to school nurses and health administrators. Provided continuing medical education to school nurses on the cause and effects of overweight children and the related health concerns faced by public health system and schools officials.
3/03 70th Annual CAHPERD State Conference. Presented Flexibility and Yoga for Dance Instructors and instructed morning fitness activity Aerobic Potpourri both sponsored by the Division of Dance.
2/03 Northeast California Diabetes and Pregnancy Program. Presented a program entitled Active Rest: Exercises for pregnant women confined to bed rest for continuing education credit for diabetes educators including physicians, nurses, dieticians, social workers.
2/03 Combined Conventions of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Organized and participated in a panel discussion entitled: Addressing Childhood Obesity: Finding Community Partners and Developing Community Solutions. The panel included representatives a school nurse from Sacramento City Unified School District ; a dietitian from Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento ; two physical educators from CSU, Sacramento, and myself as an exercise physiologist.
1/03 2003 California Childhood Obesity Conference. Developed a poster presentation entitled: Pediatric Healthy Lifestyle Program: A Community Collaboration in Treatment and Prevention of Childhood Obesity that outlined the clinical treatment model, the school-based activities, and the community activities being developed for the Sacramento area.
10/02 Western College Physical Education Society. Co-presented a discussion group on Preparing Physical Educators to Improve the Health and Fitness Levels of Overweight School Children designed to investigate the inclusion of topics related to physically educating overweight children in teacher preparation programs in the Western region.
7/01 Cal Poly Physical Education Workshop. Presenting a master class to physical educators entitled “ Stretching for Strength: Strength Training Without Weights ” – a teaching unit on the use elastic resistance for muscular development. Presenting a lecture to physical educators entitled “Eating Strategies for Active People ” – a practical guide on nutritional concepts and curriculum development, incorporating dietary recommendations into physical education classes.
