PARK, JENNIFER

University and Communication Service

In April of 2003 I was invited to sit on the Childhood Overweight Task Force developed by the Sacramento County Office of Health and Human Services. Together with a diverse group of public health experts we developed an action plan to educate families, schools, and health providers about the frequency, risks, treatment and complications of childhood overweight. The action plan was then forwarded to the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors.

During the past two years I was instrumental in establishing a MOU (MA030059) between the School of Health and Human Services and Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento. This MOU established a partnership that creates a community education program to teach families about healthy nutrition, the importance of physical activity and weight management. The purpose of the partnership is to help treat and prevent childhood overweight, obesity, and prevent type 2 diabetes. This joint program has been the site for internships, research, and joint presentations.

One aspect of that action plan was to educate health care providers, specifically physicians and nurses, about the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of childhood overweight and it co-morbidities. Among the recognized co-morbidities are hypertension, abnormal blood lipid levels, elevated blood insulin levels (insulin resistance), elevated blood glucose levels and other symptoms of Syndrome X. Sutter has taken a lead in providing continuing medical education (CME) classes on this topic. I have presented for the following programs

Children's Center at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento. Co-presented along with a pediatric dietitian and nurse practioner The Ins and Outs of Childhood Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes to physicians and nurses. Provided CME's to physicians and nurses in private practice on the effects of overweight children and the related health concerns faced by practioners and the importance of early detection and treatment. Discussed screening tools, diagnostics tests, patient interaction, and evaluation of patient readiness to make changes.

Sutter Children's Center: Diabetes – Let's Make it Simple. Co-presented along with a pediatric dietitian Childhood Overweight in the School Setting to school nurses and health administrators. Provided CME's to school nurses on the cause and effects of overweight children and the related health concerns faced by public health system and schools officials.

In July 2002 CSUS entered into a Partnership with Sutter Medical Center Sacramento to offer community classes for promoting healthy lifestyles for overweight children and their families. I am the CSUS liason for this partnership and I am also part of the education team that piloted a multi-disciplinary health intervention program for children ages 5-17 years and their parents. This program continues and the MOU of Understanding between CSUS and Sutter Health was renewed in the summer of 2003 for another year. I have worked with three student interns with this program, providing our students with cutting edge opportunity to the development of clinical practice dedicated to the management and treatment of type 2 diabetes in children, childhood overweight and pediatric metabolic syndrome.

The goal of the program is to improve eating habits, increase activity levels, and to reduce the incidence of over weight and t he health complications resulting from over weight and obesity. This program was developed in part to respond to the Surgeons General's Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity. The education team includes a pediatric endocrinologist, a pediatric nurse practioner, a pediatric registered dietician, and a licensed social worker. I serve as the team's exercise physiologist.

Our program is a six-week health educational series made of two hour educational blocks. About 30 minutes of each block will be devoted to exercise. Student interns actively participate in the delivery of the education piece and shadow the providers in the clinic setting. The program will begin a curriculum for 12-17 year olds in March 2004. Participants from the program are completing individual follow-ups at the hospital and will participate in ongoing community activity programs designed to support the healthy nutrition and physical activity.

In January 2003 Sacramento City Unified School District Department of Nutrition Services (SCUSD-DNS) secured a planning grant to develop a school-based curriculum to promote healthy eating and physical activity. In January 2004 additional funds were provided to implement the curriculum. The SCUSD-DNS has partnered up with the Tahoe Village Project to offer an seventh period class in the Health and Fitness Learning Academy at Hiram Johnson High School. The curriculum integrates nutritional concepts into the physical activity component and reinforces lifetime physical activity. Students will use pedometers to monitor their activity level through out the day. Students will also learn about progressive muscle relaxation and stress management. In addition to nutrition and physical activity students will learn about public advocacy and the role individuals play in promoting change.

WOODWARD, PATTY

University Service

I serve as a member of the Health Science Committee. Because the small size of our full-time teaching faculty, we fulfill many committee requirements with this one committee. This committee serves as the Curriculum Committee and the Budget Committee for the department of Health Science.

On November 11 th, 2003 I received a letter from Candace McGee, the manager in the CSUS Career Center regarding recruitment of members for the Career Center Internship Advisory Board. I telephoned Ms. McGee, and informed her that I was indeed interesting in serving on this board. As a result of this conversation I am now a member of the Career Center Internship Advisory Board.

On Friday September 12 th, 2003, I was notified by e-mail that I had been voted onto the College Injury Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) Committee by the members of the Kinesiology and Health Science faculty. This is a two year appointment and I will serve in this position until 2005.

Although I was not expected to advise students my first semester on campus, I was approached by a number of students seeking advising help. I had attended a student advising seminar through the Kinesiology/Health Science Mentoring Program, and with the help of Dr. Seid I advised Kristi Kurz and Trisha Wilkerson on November 10, 2003. I also advised Erin Hudnall November 24, 2003.

I moved to Sacramento from Fresno California in August of 2003. Since that time I have been acclimating to the new community and finding where I can make a difference and be of help. During the later part of November, I was approached by Dr. Beth Kivel of the Recreation and Leisure Studies Department, and asked if I wanted to attend a fund raiser for the local YWCA. She is a member of the Board of Directors. I purchased tickets to attend the event and on December 4 th, 2003 attended the auction held at the YWCA. While attending the event I met a number of Board members and was asked if I would be interested in serving on the board. I have since notified one of the Board members that I would be glad to serve on the Board. This will, however, not begin until later in this spring semester.

While living in Fresno, I served on the Leadership Board for Planned Parenthood Mar Monte. The Mar Monte chapter includes Sacramento California. In Fresno, I was active in the annual art auction fund raiser. In years past I have attended weekly committee meetings for the procurement of art and the planning of the auction event. I will continue to serve in the capacity on a more limited scale, but have consented to help the chapter by signing artist request letters to be mailed from the Fresno office. I will also continue to look for ways to serve the Sacramento office on some level.
