    Assessment Plan

The department of Sociology has had the following Assessment Plan in place since the fall of 1998. Since assessment is not a "one-shot" occurrence, this plan has been updated every two or three years. As results are examined and studied, this assessment plan may undergo further alteration. Over a period of time, the results of the Assessment Plan will provide the department with an opportunity to continually reflect on its curriculum and learning expactations and outcomes. The Assessment Plan consists of the following ten parts/items:

1. A letter about assessment to each new student major: this letter informs students of what assessment is and of their obligation to participate in the department's assessment plan before they graduate.

2. The Department's program goals and learning expectations

3. The Department's curriculum matrix: this is a matrix of the department's courses. It lists each course in the department and what is covered in that course with repspect to the department's program goals and learning expectations; in other words, the matrix is an overview of where the cirruculum provides students with the opportunity to study, review, and reflect on the program goals and learning expectations. 4. An entering student questionnaire: This questionnaire is given to every student who declares himself or herself a sociology major. This questionnaire is given to students during "new student" orientation and/or when they first come in for advising and/or in Sociology 101.

5) An exiting student on-line questionnaire: This is given each semester to all sociology majors who have been identified by the university as graduating during that semester. A letter directs students to the on-line questionnaire. This questionnaire measures the students’ attitudes about what they learned in the program.

6. An alumni questionnaire: this survey is sent by the Institutional Research Office, once every five years. This Survey consists of the ACT standardized alumni survey, plus 10 departmental questions.

7. An alumni website: this assists the department alumni committee with keeping in touch with students and alumni, provides a forum for offering feedback, stories, reflections, and etc.

8. Performance measures: the "performance measure" of student learning expectations consists of a selected number of student papers/ work from the department's required core courses. Each semester, a sample of ten papers will be taken from the core courses. Students will be informed ahead of time that their paper may be included in the assessment, but that no names will be included with the paper, maintaining complete anonymity for the students. The purpose is not to look at individual students, instructors, or courses, but to get a collective idea or "look" at the work students are doing. Papers will only be taken from one Sociology core course (equal numbers to be taken from each section) each year, beginning with Sociology 125, then Soc 150, then 194, at which time the cycle will repeat itself.

9. An assessment committee: each semester an assessment committee in the department will oversee the data collection and analysis of the entering student survey, the exit survey, and the papers from the required core courses. We will gather the same data each year even though we are only addressing a couple of the learning goals each year.  Occasionally additional measurements will be included in the assessment process depending on the learning goals being assessed in a given year.  The following assessment schedule will be used:

10. Evaluation and reflection: at the beginning of every school year, all members of the department will be informed of the conclusions of the committee and presented with the changes suggested by the committee to address any concerns (if needed).  The department will then determine the best course of action, or if any action needs to be taken. .
