The Pacific Sociological Association is housed in the department. The Executive Officer/Secretary Treasurer, Dean S. Dorn, is an emeritus professor. The PSA is the professional association for sociologists in the western region of the United States. It currently has 1,300 members. The association publishes a newsletter, The Pacific Sociologist (three issues per year) and a journal, Sociological Perspectives (four times per year), published by the University of California Press.
The Institute for Social Research is also housed in the department. The Institute is directed by sociology professor Carole Barnes and engages in research and consulting work on a variety of issues for State, County, and City agencies, as well as for the private sector.
The Department sponsored the Untold Atrocities photography exhibit and lecture/film series on World War II in China. The exhibit, brought to the University and coordinated by Emeritus professor Ivy Lee, was held March 8 - April 2, 2000.
