Gary Davis knows what’s in a name.

“I know how a name can grab the attention of others and give you an opportunity to prove yourself,” says Davis, whose own name has been mistaken for former Gov. Gray Davis.

Though no relation, Davis recognizes the magnitude of identity. So it’s no surprise that the first order of business for the new executive director of the Sacramento State Alumni Association is to build the association’s, and its Alumni Center’s, recognition among graduates.

“I want to be part of building an alumni relations program that is as great as the leaders who are our alumni,” Davis says. “I was tired of running into Sacramento State alumni who say they don’t know what’s happening on the campus. We are going to change that.”

The Alumni Association owns and operates the Alumni Center, which is used for alumni and non-alumni events. According to Davis, getting alumni involved is vital in order to keep up with trends in higher education.

“CSU campuses are becoming less and less dependent on state funds,” he says. “A significant portion of our budget now comes from private contributions. Alumni are the most likely to contribute and are more willing to do so if they remain connected. In order to maintain the high quality academic programs offered at Sac State, our alumni must remain vested.”

Davis plans to reach out to as many of the University’s more than 175,000 alumni as possible. His staff will survey alums to see what activities would draw them back to campus. “We want to find ways to connect with our alums where they work,” he says.

Davis also wants to work with colleges and departments to build a more unified alumni relations program.

Davis, a former Associated Students president, earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Sac State in 1999. Before taking his new position in February, Davis was the program director for the California State University system Office of Advocacy and Institutional Relations, working closely with the CSU system’s 23 campus alumni associations. Prior to that, he was Assemblymember Darrell Steinberg’s legislative director.
