Fall 2003 l Capital University Journal
Message from the President

Fall 2003

Photo of President Alexander Gonzalez
During my first months as president, I have met and talked with hundreds of people at this University and in the community. From those discussions, I have been impressed with the enthusiasm, dedication, talent, knowledge and passionate commitment to California State University, Sacramento. That energy will help move the University to the next level.

“It is clear to me that the solid foundations are in place to move this University to the next level of excellence.”

In my first remarks to the campus community at the opening of the fall semester, I outlined my early impressions and several topics that resonate among the people with whom I have spoken. In the following weeks, we held three town hall meetings to explore those issues further and develop new ones. The meetings were well-attended and were open to anyone, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, who wanted to bring issues to the table.

From these meetings we are beginning to develop a workable strategic plan for the campus that helps us to define priorities. You can read excerpts of those meetings starting on page 9 in this magazine. It is already very clear that among the issues we will address are:

• Athletics
• Residential Community
• Growth
• Campus Identity
• University Fundraising

If there are other major issues that you feel need consideration, please bring them to my attention at townhall@csus.edu.

A change in leadership is always a good time to examine the workings of the University, to reaffirm what is working well and to improve and strengthen what is not. It is clear to me that the solid foundations are in place to move this University to the next level of excellence. That is my goal and you will see many changes in the coming year.

I am honored the CSU Board of Trustees selected me to guide this excellent campus. The more I learn, the more convinced I am that collectively we can make a tremendous difference to our students and to this community. I am looking forward to your support, commitment and input in the years ahead.

Sincerely,
Alexander Gonzalez Signature
