Don Dean Anderson, ’67, B.S., Business Administration, has been recalled to active duty serving as chief, Homeland Security Branch, 11th Coast Guard District. He is responsible for maritime security of all the ports along the California coastline. Alejandro Garcia,’69, B.A., Social Work, has been named a “Social Work Pioneer” by the National Association of Social Workers. Garcia was recognized as an educator, author and advocate, especially in addressing the needs of the elderly Latino population. Garcia is a professor of social work at Syracuse University, where he has been since 1978. At Sac State, Garcia participated in Cesar Chavez’ farm workers’ movement and co-founded the Sacramento chapter of the Chicano Social Worker Organization. 1970s David L. Robertson, ’71, B.A., Mathematics, is the area counsel-California for Pulte Home Corporation. He previously spent 19 years with Trainor Robertson, Attorneys at Law, a company he co-founded in 1982.
Miguel Navarette, ’77, M.A., Bilingual/Cross Cultural Education, works for California’s Department of Education with the Office of Language Policy. He started as one of three consultants in the original Office of Bilingual Education and has served in compliance, language census and vocational education. Carole Nutt, ’77, B.A., Government; ’92, M.S.W., Social Work, is semi-retired, working part time as the clinical director of Genesis, the mental health program of Loaves and Fishes in Sacramento. She is also doing pro-bono work supervising social work students at a Senior Legal Hot Line. Dennis Lloyd, ’78, B.S., Business Administration, was selected to participate in the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon Championships in October. 1980s Timothy Arthur Appel, ’80, B.S., Biological Sciences, is working for California’s Department of Justice, Bureau of Forensic Service Toxicology Laboratory. Julie Theriault, ’80, B.S., Biological Sciences, was recently named president elect of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA). Theriault will serve as president elect for one year, and then automatically step into the position of president in 2004. Patrick D. Fleck, ’81, B.S., Accountancy, recently began working toward his MBA after being accepted to the Sloan School of Management at MIT. Delta M. Pick Mello, ’81, B.A., Communication Studies, is the marketing director for the Sacramento Zoo. She has partnered with Sac State professor Larry Chase and former classmate Patty Jenkinson to conduct visitor surveys that benefit the zoo’s needs and provide communication studies students with a service learning project. JoAnn Anglin, ’82, B.A., Communication Studies, has a new career as a poet-teacher working with Sacramento-area school districts. She most enjoys fostering the poetry of fifth and sixth graders. She is retired from the State of California, where she wrote text for State Park exhibits and worked as a public information officer. Sherri (Hammer) Collinwood, ’83, B.A., Psychology, has been working as an interior designer in London. Currently she is studying flower design. Dennis Hall, ’84, B.S., Business Administration, is working with artist David Lobenberg to create, produce and market a commemorative print to honor the 50th Anniversary of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Squadron. Patrick W. Maher, Jr., ’85, B.S., Engineering Technology; ’97, M.A., Communication Studies, is employed at Hill Air Force Base in Utah. He works as an engineering program manager in the Space and C3I Systems Office. Mark Noguchi, ’85, B.S., Nursing, received his M.S. in nursing with a clinical specialty in anesthesiology from the the CSU Long Beach/Kaiser Permanente program in nurse anesthesia in 1989. He served as president of the Hawaii Association of Nurse Anesthetists. He recently accepted the position of assistant professor at Samuel Merritt College in Oakland, Calif. He continues to work at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Rafael, Calif. as a part-time nurse anesthetist. Richard Stevens, ’85, B.S., Recreation Administration, is working for CTB McGraw Hill Kelly Services as a standard test evaluator and scorer.
Brad Aronson, ’88, B.S., Construction Management, has sold his 45-person company, Pacific Program Management, to Concord-based Harris and Associates. He will serve as vice president in charge of Harris and Associates’ Sacramento regional office. Carrie Markel, ’88, B.A., Art, opened her one-woman exhibit called “Sacred Spaces” at the Lincoln Arts Center in September 2003. 1990s Pamela Bulahan, ’90, B.A., Communication Studies, has started Pamela Multimedia, an image design firm. Kelly Nelson, ’90 B.A., Biological Sciences; ’92 M.S.W., Social Work, is a brief treatment manager for Grant Mental Health Care in Moses Lake, Wash. Robert Nelson, ’90 B.S., Psychology; ’92 M.S.W., Social Work, is a resource manager for North Central Washington Regional Support Network in Ephrata, Wash. Donald R. Petron, ’91, B.A., Communication Studies is an instrument technician for the California Air Resources Board in Sacramento. Mary Wallace, ’91, B.A., Media Communication, is the manager of public affairs for the California Transplant Donor Network. Daniel R. Cruikshanks, ’92, B.A., Psychology, is an assistant professor and clinical coordinator in the graduate counseling program at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio. He also serves as the clinical supervisor for the Christian Counseling Center of Tiffin and is a therapist in private practice. Cruikshanks is a member of the board of trustees of the Seneca County AIDS Council and a volunteer with Community Hospice Care of Tiffin. He is working on ethics research on clinical supervision as well as research on improving quality of life for the terminally ill. Cruikshanks received an MEd in counseling from the University of Missouri, St. Louis, and a Ph.D. in counseling and family therapy from Saint Louis University. Charmin (Scivally) Calamaris, ’93, B.A., Geography, is a new city planner for the City of Bothell, Wash. in the Greater Seattle-Metro region. Charmin attended graduate school at Eastern Washington University. Wayne Dill, ’93, B.S., Accountancy, has been elected president of the Fresno Chapter of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants for 2003-04. Dill is a partner in the firm of Moore, Grider & Co, where he is responsible for business consultations, preparing tax returns and tax planning. Cecilia LaBranch, ’96, B.S., Criminal Justice, was recently promoted from Lieutenant to Captain with the California Youth Authority. Christopher Sean Quinn, ’96, B.A., Philosophy, was recently promoted to fire captain with the Sacramento Metro Fire Department. He also recently formed Corporate Transportation Solutions, Inc., a Chauffer service and Air Charter business serving Northern California. Kathy Sheehan, ’98, B.A., English; ’01, M.A., English (Creative Writing), is an independent contractor coordinating, writing and editing alumni news magazines for four Sac State Colleges while also doing freelance writing projects. James C. Lyndan Buchanan, ’99, B.S., Criminal Justice; ’99, B.S., Psychology, recently graduated from the Basic Hospital Corps School at Naval Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes, Ill. Buchanan’s first assignment after graduation will involve direct patient care. 2000s Chris Anderson, ’00, B.S., Business Administration, is the director of customer support at Fiduciary Management Technologies, a recent start-up firm providing software and technical services to clients in the legal field. Julian Irvine, ’01, B.A., Communication Studies (Organizational Communication), works as a sales and leasing representative at Florin Road Toyota in Sacramento. Lisa Perry, ’01, Social Science, is the education director for the California Forest Products Commission. Gina Rafaelli, ’01, B.S., Nursing, works at Folsom Mercy Hospital in the Labor and Delivery and Post-Partum Unit. Elisa Carvalho, ’01, B.A., English, is in a yearlong fellowship with the Great Valley Fellows Program, a new program of the Great Valley Center. Through a series of five-week apprenticeships, Carvalho will work closely with leaders in Central Valley agriculture, media, government business and the nonprofit sector. Karla Grant, ’01, MSW, Social Work, is a behavior analyst with the Yolo County Office of Education. Anna L. McKennon, ’02, B.A., English, will receive her secondary education single subject credential from Sac State in the fall of 2003. Felipe Olvera, Jr., ’02, B.S., Recreation Administration, attends the University of Florida, where he is pursuing a master’s degree in Educational Leadership in Higher Education. Daniel, L. Rummel, Jr., ’02, B.A., Government, has completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. Camron King, ’02, B.A., Government, is a program director for the California Association of Winegrape Growers. King’s areas of responsibility include vineyard and wildlife habitat management; private lands issues; and air quality and water quality issues. King also coordinates program and sponsorship development for the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium, the nation’s largest wine industry symposium and trade show. Grads

Seven new Sac State alumni, one from each of the University’s Colleges, received the Outstanding Senior Award at the annual Honors Convocation in the spring. They were Jose Castillo, College of Health and Human Services; Willie G. Harris, College of Education; Leonard Hoffman, College Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies; Matthew K. Lettau, College of Engineering and Computer Science; Sherlyn A. Reafsnyder, College of Arts and Letters; Sita K. Singh, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics; and Lisa Wilson, College of Business Administration. Castillo is a criminal justice major honored for rising above gang life to enlist in the Marine Corps and for serving as an intern with the California District Attorney’s Association. Harris, a vocational education major, was recognized for his service to persons with disabilities in his position with the City of Sacramento. Social sciences major Hoffman was honored for his work as pastor of a multicultural church in London and his commitment to special education while working in the North Sacramento School District. Lettau, a computer engineering major, was recognized for his academic work in designing new development boards and maintaining design tools for two computer labs, for tutoring student peers in many subject areas and for serving six years of active duty with the U.S. Navy. Reafsnyder, an English major, was honored for her participation in the student research competition, her extracurricular service as a foster parent for 27 years and for raising seven foster children last fall while earning A’s in all her academic work. Biological sciences student Singh was recognized for feeding the homeless, working with mentally disabled patients, serving as an emergency room volunteer and tutoring high school students. And Wilson, a management major, was recognized for her extracurricular service with a number of student and professional organizations and her participation in a cross-cultural trip to Egypt, where she worked with a local micro-enterprise development. |
