BAR-HOPPING for a cause

IMAGE: 6000 coasters were distributed to spread the word about dangers of date rape drugs.Students from Sac State sororities and fraternities and the Queer Straight Alliance scoped out the local bar scene in the spring, spreading the word about dangers of date rape drugs.

They distributed 6,000 coasters carrying the message "Watch your drink-Watch your friends" with information about drugs that can be slipped into drinks, such as liquid ecstasy, GHB, and Rohypnol. The coasters also explained how to get help if a person is drugged or assaulted.

Sac State is also continuing its campaign to promote responsible use of alcohol. The "Wanna Party?" program targets house parties, where research has shown most underage drinking occurs.

Beer glass-shaped brochures, which encourage students to be responsible social hosts, were handed out during orientation
sessions for new students and to the managers of apartment complexes. The brochures offer tips on ways to reduce liability for the host (such as not serving alcohol to minors), making friends with the neighbors and how to recognize alcohol poisoning.

The coaster program was made possible by the Jesse Snow Memorial Fund, in honor of a Sac State student who was killed in a drunk-driving accident in 2001. The Wanna Party campaign is funded by the National Institute for Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse.
