New land for new housing

Sac State has completed the purchase of a 25-acre parcel near campus, which will be used to develop affordable and attainable housing for faculty and staff. Campus officials say the housing is needed to help recruit top faculty and staff to an area with fast-rising housing costs.

The land is located on Ramona Avenue just south of Folsom Blvd., about a mile from the main campus. It was the site of a former California Youth Authority facility.

The parcel was formally acquired by the University after nearly two years of negotiations with CYA and the state's Department of General Services. University Enterprises, the non-profit business entity of Sac State, spearheaded the deal, paying $2.3 million for the land before transferring it to the University. The project will be developed, and eventually managed, by an arm of University Enterprises.

Prices will be controlled through a variety of approaches used at other California campuses, including California State University, Monterey Bay and University of California, Irvine.
